The focus of this study is the question of why Donna Haraway, who frequently draws attention to animal exploitation in her writings and invites us to form new kinships with other species, does not advocate veganism, and even maintains a distance from this practice. In answering this question, I will focus particularly on Haraway’s example of feral pig hunting in her book When Species Meet (2008). This example, along with Haraway’s other texts and interviews, illustrates that Haraway's opposition to veganism stems from her view of it as a prohibitive practice that severs our relationships with animals, and offers a false promise of moral purity in our interactions with them. I will raise two objections to this view. First, I will argue that killing an animal cannot be a way of relating to it; on the contrary, it renders such a relation impossible. Second, I will claim that Haraway confines veganism to a narrow framework and that veganism does not necessarily promise moral purity. I will conclude by suggesting that while Haraway's perspective can nonetheless offer valuable insights for vegan ethics, these insights are best realized through a commitment to care as developed within feminist animal ethics, from which Haraway herself draws.
