Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological method involves two essential techniques: the first is epokhē, which can be translated as “bracketing” or “suspending,” and the second is reduction, which may be rendered as “reduction” or “leading back.” Through epokhē and reduction, Husserl claims that objects can be seen as they truly are by means of pure consciousness. He argues that the approaches of other sciences and their attitudes toward phenomena remain within the natural attitude, and therefore fail to reach the essences of phenomena, limiting themselves to the examination of phenomena within a restricted domain. Hannah Arendt is one of the leading political theorists of the twentieth century. This study contends that traces of epokhē and reduction can be identified in Arendt’s work Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil. After addressing the grounds for this connection, the discussion will focus particularly on how, in highly political matters such as these, the possibility of justice depends on breaking free from the natural attitude, whether Husserl’s technique of reduction is suitable for this purpose, and how Arendt’s stance may serve as a significant example in this context.
