Abstract

Modern philosophy is known for being dominated by two major philosophical currents. One of these is rationalism and the other is empiricism. The leading thinkers of these two currents, Locke and Leibniz, engage in a debate about the origin of ideas, which, as a result of Descartes' teachings, became central to early modern philosophy and shaped modern philosophy. Locke, as an empiricist, argues that the source of all ideas is our experience, that our mind is initially passive, and therefore there are no innate ideas. As a rationalist, Leibniz, on the other hand, puts forward a theory stating that ideas are rational realities that are always preserved in the divine mind outside of us, and that these ideas are always potentially present not only in God's mind but also in our minds. The aim of this study is to discuss the debate between the empiricist Locke and the rationalist Leibniz on innate ideas and to draw attention to the consequences of the debate in the context of modern philosophy.
