Two Forms of Peaceful Resistance Against the State: Civil Disobedience and Conscientious Objection
Laws are rules that determine the rights and duties of citizens. Laws have the power to enforce sanctions. So, should individuals obey laws that they believe cause an injustice? How should people react to laws that lead to injustice? How should an individual act in cases where the duty to obey the law conflicts with the duty to seek justice? Do individuals have the right to resist the state in order to correct injustice? It is a human duty to stand against injustice. In general, two forms of peaceful resistance against the state are mentioned. These are civil disobedience and conscientious objection. Civil disobedience is a form of peaceful action by a group to correct policies they find unjust. It is usually an open action against the majority's sense of justice. Conscientious objection, on the other hand, is the individual person's refusal to comply with orders and laws that they find immoral. This study will focus on civil disobedience and conscientious objection, which are two forms of peaceful resistance against the state. First, the general characteristics of civil disobedience and conscientious objection will be discussed. Later, it will be discussed whether it is possible to justify resistance against the state.
