Abstract

The soul (psykhe) has a long and problematic history. Surprisingly, it still has a living force and continues to resonate today. Far from being of special interest to theologians, philosophers, or psychologists, the concept of the soul demands to be at the center of our thinking about what it means to be human. The soul is the subject of many disciplines of philosophy, from moral philosophy to philosophy of religion, from philosophy of mind to philosophical psychology. Again, many cultures have tried to explain the life or movement principle in all living things with the soul, and they have put forward various views on the soul. One of these is Heraclitus’ conception of the soul, which is going to be discussed in this study. Heraclitus recognises that the soul is identical with fire and logos. The identity of the soul with fire and logos also shapes his views on life and death. While he describes life with the dryness and warmth of the soul, he expresses death as being wet as opposed to fire. Wisdom, again, according to Heraclitus, is, in a metaphorical expression, the intensification of the fire in the soul as opposed to an old life in terms of the soul.
