Husserl: Pure Self, Otherness and Constitution
According to the phenomenology of Husserl, ‘constitution’ in the transcendental consciousness, which is the field of essences, takes place in three steps as the establishment of material beings, living beings and the Geist world. These steps are directly related to the concepts of solus ipse and intersubjectivity. The constitution of the objective existence of the world and the constitution of otherness are different from each other. ‘Others’ are required for completing the constitution. For this reason, Husserl puts forward another epoché, which he expresses as a ‘peculiar epoché’ apart from the epoché. While the first of these epochés is applied to reach the solus ipse area, the ‘peculiar epoché’ is used to reach otherness. In this study, with the phenomenological reduction, these two types of epoché and the residue (‘pure self’) remaining after them have been emphasized. It has been tried to explain some basic and necessary concepts of Husserl in a very short way in order to understand the pure self and constitution better. The purpose of all this is, to think critically about the pure self, which is said to be absolute.
