Is Marriage a Handicap for the Pursuit of Philosophy?
The question “Is marriage a handicap for the pursuit of philosophy?” might seem strange at first and some might even argue whether it is a philosophical question at all. However, this “bizarre” question was asked to Stoic Musonius Rufus himself and while trying to answer it, the philosopher both referred to the other married philosophers whom he admired and founded many proofs on the fact that marital life is a philosophical life. When it comes to the Roman period and especially the late Stoicism, we can see that many questions similar to this question are discussed. Many urgent questions about everyday life are answered with philosophical grounds, and this approach makes it possible to understand the attitude of Rome and Roman Stoicism towards philosophy. In this study, through this question asked rhetorically, the views of Musonius Rufus and Hierocles on marriage are addressed and how a daily issue can be proposed as a philosophical way of life is discussed.
