Abstract

The main objective of this study is the bringing back of the non-existent (maʿdūm), which is one of the most important problems of theology. The analysis is carried out through the views of Ibn Sīnā, the leading representative of both the Peripatetics, and the theologians. Among those whose views were given the most space in the text are theologians from the Ahl al-Sunna school such as al-Ghazzālī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Jurjānī, and al-Taftāzānī, and theologians from the Muʿtazilite school such as Ibn Mattawayh, Taqī al-Dīn al-Najrānī, and al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār. Conclusions are drawn through analytical methods of examining their views in transmission, interpretation, discussion and assessment of these two parties’ views. Restitution of maʿdūm is used herein in the sense of bringing back a previously existed thing into its exact same original state before non-existent. In Islamic thought, it is directly related to raising from the dead in the hereafter, in other words, to the question of resurrection (hasher). This leads to the problematic isuues of sameness and similarity, that is to say, whether the bodies in the hereafter would be the same or similar to those in this world; otherwise, it would not be the existence or non-existence of the hereafter. Three basic questions formed the backbone of the study: (1) Is the afterlife purely physical, (2) is it a combination of body and soul, (3) or is it purely spiritual?
