Abstract

Questions about what life is and the nature of life have been among the most important questions from the very first moment that human beings started to question themselves and the world. The answers to these questions have changed over time and were first addressed within the boundaries of philosophy, and then, in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the emergence of biology as an independent science, they were placed on a scientific basis. N. C. Paulescu was a scientist who came to the fore at the beginning of the twentieth century with his thoughts on life. He gave three lectures on the subject at the University of Bucharest, which were published as Physiologie Philosophique: Finalité, matérialisme, âme et Dieu. Ankaralı Ali Rıza translated the first two lectures of this work into Turkish shortly afterwards and published them as a serialised in Sırat-ı Müstakim. Although he planned to translate the third lecture, he could not realise this plan. In this article first discusses the identity of Ankaralı Ali Rıza and the reasons why he translated Paulescu's work, then briefly introduces Paulescu and his works, and finally discusses the ideas in Physiologie Philosophique: Finalité, matérialisme, âme et Dieu through Ankaralı Ali Rıza's partial translation.
