Hans Vaihinger’s Fictionalism: The Philosophy of As If
This study aims to evaluate and analyze the views of Hans Vaihinger who defines philosophy as a rational, abstract and methodical treatment of reality or human existence and experiences, through his work called ‘The Philosophy of As If’, written in 1876. The work was written to show the central importance of fiction in forming opinions and decisions about our various daily or scientific activities, therefore the main subject of the work is fiction. Fictions are not only something on which human cognition is based but also everything necessary for satisfactory explanations of life and the world is based on fiction. For this reason, even if they do not have any basis in reality, fictions are the most important tools that human beings use to rationalize the irrational world, as Vaihinger states.
