Abstract

Kant claims that human being has a natural propensity to evil and presents this propensity as a basis for the realization of freedom. He acknowledges that the person bearing the trait of free existence is bound to act in line with the moral law, and in that vein also with the deontology in order to avoid the evil. Adorno, on the other hand, claims that there exists no freedom in the sense Kant assumes in the today’s world. Extrapolating from negative moral philosophy, Adorno tries to show that Kantian duty-based ethics can operate as an instrument legitimating the evil available. This article focuses on how Kant grounds the doctrine of radical evil within the scope of the relationship between freedom and evil and it elaborates on the way of commentating Adorno’s objections to Kant within the context of the negative moral philosophy.
