Abstract

Ibn Rushd is known as the Great Commentator in the history of logic and philosophy. He wrote different commentaries on different works on the sub-branches of logic as well as on the works that deal with the sub-branches of philosophy. Jawami al-Mantiq (Short Commentaries on Logic), one of his youth works, are examples of one of his writing styles, jawami’.  Three of these treatises, whose original Arabic has been lost and have survived to the present day as Judaeo-Arabic versions and Hebrew and Latin translations, were edited in Arabic and translated into English by Charles E. Butterworth. One of the treatises in Ibn Rushd’s Jawami al-Mantiq is Jawami Kitab al-Khatabah (Short Commentary on Rhetoric). In this article, we will handle Jawami Kitab al-Khatabah as a part of Jawami al-Mantiq and try to describe its history, name, content, writing style and its place in the history of logic and the teaching of logic. In addition to that, we will try to indicate Alfarabi’s influence on Jawami‘ al-Mantiq written by Ibn Rushd in the example of Jawami Kitab al-Khatabah and to seek an answer to the question of what the existence of Jawami Kitab al-Khatabah means for us while we have Ibn Rushd’s Talkhis Kitab al-Khatabah.
