Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the books attributed to Ibn Zur‘a (d. 398/108) in the biographical and bio-bibliographical books (abaqāt) have survived to the present day, and to prove that Ibn Zur‘a is indeed the author of these texts, which are extant in various manuscripts. Since the early 1950s, divergent views have been advanced regarding these texts. This controversy stems from the absence of the author’s name in most manuscript copies, as well as the parallels drawn between the introductory sections of Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-ayyib’s (d. ö. 435/1044) long commentaries on the Isagoge and Categories and the introductions to Ibn Zur‘a’s own works on the same two subjects from among his five books. Although Thomson had previously made a brief assessment, it was Stern who initiated the debate surrounding these texts. Gutas referred to the texts indirectly; Badawī and Gyekye attributed them to Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-ayyib; whereas Dānishpazhūh criticized Stern, Badawī, and Gyekye, argued instead that the texts belong to Ibn Zur‘a. Jihāmī and al-‘Ajam edited and published three of these texts based on three manuscripts, without addressing the debates concerning their authorship. Nonetheless, in the subsequent period, Lameer and Daiber continued to attribute the texts to Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-ayyib, overlooking both the manuscript notes and the studies of Dānishpazhūh and the editors, which led to persistent misconceptions regarding the identity of the author.
