Abstract

A Reproach of the Hanbalite Affirmation of Divine Attributes: The Refutations of Abu al-Faraj b. al-Jawzi
In the 4th century Hegira, Hanbalism would undergo several ideological developments resulting in tension and ideological splits. One of the most pertinent examples of these splits is regarding the question of Divine attributes known through revelation (al-sifat al-khabariyya). These debates concerning the Divine attributes have given rise to accusations that the Ahl al-Hadith, specifically the Hanbalite tradition, anthropomorphized God following their extreme insistence on affirming Divine attributes. Within this context, various doctrinal schools, including some Hanbalites, would critique the affirmation of divine attributes and permit the reinterpretation (ta’wil) of those deemed to be anthropomorphic. In the heat of these debates, Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi would author several refutations against what he considered to be anthropomorphic elements within the school. This paper examines Ibn al-Jawzi’s rationalist interpretation of the Divine attributes and the effect of his refutations on infighting within the Hanbalite tradition. In doing so, this paper analyzes his arguments concerning al-sifat al-khabariyya and his objections to positions held traditionally within the Hanbalite school.
