The Relationship of Epimeleia Heautou-Sapere Aude in Foucault’s Concept of Ethics
Foucault, one of the important figures of 20th century, is known with his works intending to undermine the idea of any subject in the period of archeology and genealogy in which, he was concentrated on the systems of power and information. According to Foucault, the “constructive subject” is essentially a “constructed” subject within the power relations and information systems. In this context, Foucault is known as the sharpest critics of enlightenment and modernism in the 20th century. The subject in Foucault is a humanistic mystery, a fiction. However, essentially since 1980’s, the course of Foucault’s work is evolved from the “constructed subject” towards the “the self-constructing subject”. He developed a new ethics reading about En-lightenment with his ethics works dating to Christianity and then to An-cient times via sexuality and adapted a relatively positive attitude com-pared to his old manner. İn this paper, we will take on Foucault’s new ethics reading about Enlightenment via Kant and Baudelaire and about the relation of this reading to the ethical studies that extend to the Greeks.
